In January 2024, two days before Pope Francis called for a global ban on surrogacy, a certain billionaire art collector shared a picture of himself one-on-one with the Pontifex.

That was odd, as Mr. Berggruen used surrogates twice himself, for both of his children. It is unknown whether he raised the issue at all with his holiness.

When your hero wants to ban your way of life, do you still kowtow?

Balthazar owner Keith McNally, who “happen to admire” the boss, had a problem with Nicolas bergging about the papal encounter and posting about it all over his platforms, looking like a head of state visiting the Vatican.

Mr. McNally misled followers promising to be “off instagram” till Feb 2024

Another weird thing about Berggruen is his side-gig as YouTube influencer, uploading numerous videos of himself giving advice for humanity on better ways to conduct itself.

Here’s a twenty compilation sample, where NB talks love, capitalism, climate and freedom (but nothing about religion, Catholicism or surrogacy) —
